Do you need an eSIM for France?
By Serhat Dogan · Founder & editor, Miyaw eSIM · Last updated 2026-06-07
An eSIM is the easiest way to land in Paris already online — no SIM shop, no queue. It installs before you fly, keeps your home number, and roams on France's networks (Orange, SFR, Bouygues, Free), among Europe's fastest. Touring Europe — or heading on to Morocco? One regional plan covers the journey. For a week, about 5 GB.
eSIM vs the alternatives in France
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Instant data; keeping your number; multi-country trips | Data-only; needs an eSIM-capable phone |
| French SIM (Orange/SFR) | A French number; long stays | Shop visit + ID; swaps out your home SIM |
| EU-resident roaming | EU travelers (roam-like-at-home) | Only free with an EU plan — not for non-EU visitors |
| Home-carrier roaming | Zero setup | Pricey for non-EU visitors |
France connectivity at a glance
| What | Detail | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Networks | Orange, SFR, Bouygues, Free | A travel eSIM roams on a partner network — no French SIM needed |
| Speed | 4G ~84 Mbps; 5G ~273 Mbps | Among Europe's fastest 4G; widely available 5G (OpenSignal) |
| Data for a week | ~5 GB typical | Maps, messaging, social, a few video calls |
| On to Morocco or Europe? | One regional plan can cover France + Europe, or France + Morocco | Common for the France↔Morocco trip |
Do you really need one?
If you want maps to the right Métro line, museum bookings and messaging working on arrival, an eSIM is the least hassle. A French SIM means a shop and ID; an eSIM installs before you fly and switches on at the gate, keeping your own number. France's Wi-Fi is fine in hotels, but not on the street or the TGV.
France only, wider Europe, or on to Morocco?
If France is your only stop, a France plan is cheapest. Touring Europe? A regional Europe plan covers France plus neighbours on one install. And France↔Morocco is one of the most travelled corridors — if that's your route, look for a plan that covers both rather than buying two. Decide your route first, then pick the plan.
EU residents may already be covered by 'roam like at home'; visitors from outside the EU get the better deal from a travel eSIM.
How much data do you need in France?
A typical week — maps, messaging, social and a few video calls — is about 0.7 GB a day, so roughly 5 GB. Two weeks or daily streaming? Step up to 10 GB or unlimited. Our data-needs guide breaks it down by activity.
